Auroville and the World
Auroville in Brief
Auroville is a universal township in the making for a population of up to 50,000 people from around the world.
The Dream of Auroville – an ideal township devoted to an experiment in human unity – came to the Mother as early as the 1930s.
In the mid-1960s the concept was developed and put before the Government. of India, who gave their backing and took it to the General Assembly of UNESCO. In 1966 UNESCO passed a unanimous resolution commending Auroville as a project of international importance for the future of humanity, thereby giving their full encouragement.

The Auroville Charter
A document for all humanity
Given by the Mother in 1968, the Charter of Auroville seems to be a document for all humanity.
It is the spiritual and ethical foundation of the township. It affirms that Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole, and offers a framework for an educational, spiritual, and material evolution.
AUROVILLE CHARTER
- Auroville belongs to nobody in particular. Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole. But to live in Auroville, one must be a willing servitor of the Divine Consciousness.
- Auroville will be the place of an unending education, of constant progress, and a youth that never ages.
- Auroville wants to be the bridge between the past and the future. Taking advantage of all discoveries from without and from within, Auroville will boldly spring towards future realisations.
- Auroville will be a site of material and spiritual researches for a living embodiment of an actual human unity.
Auroville & UNESCO
Global recognition for a global aspiration
The association between Auroville and UNESCO dates back even before the foundation of Auroville.
Since 1966, UNESCO has passed six unanimous resolutions of support for Auroville, recognizing it as a unique international experiment in education, cultural exchange, and human unity.
International Cooperation Cell, Government of India
A platform for educational exchange
Housed within India’s Ministry of Education, the International Cooperation Cell proposes dialogues between Auroville and global institutions.
Through this cell, SAIIER continues to grow in its ability to host students, interns, and researchers from around the world.
