The Sri Aurobindo International Institute of Educational Research possesses unique potentiality for research and experimentation in education. The very special characteristic of all the research teams is that they are composed of dedicated aspirants from different countries and cultural backgrounds. In the year 2025, SAIIER has 46 sub-units including 16 schools within and on the outskirts of Auroville, and 31 units in areas including physical education, music, visual arts, and research in special themes such as Sanskrit and Sri Aurobindo’s works. 

SAIIER units are quite autonomous in their functioning, and usually approach internal organization quite organically, and decisions are most often made as a team. The Auroville schools (in the field of educational research) are represented by the Auroville School Board that meets monthly to attend to issues that concern all of them; similarly the Outreach schools coordinate via the Outreach School Board. An all-SAIIER meeting is held at least once a year. Decisions in SAIIER are taken by a Board. The administrative work of SAIIER is coordinated from a central office located near the Auroville Foundation building in the Administrative Area.
