Education

Lifelong Learning

“The aim of Education is not to prepare man to suceed in life and society, but to increase his perfectibility to the utmost.
—The Mother

Towards Unending Education

Education in Auroville is a living process—not confined to classrooms or age—one that evolves with each child, each adult, each collective aspiration. Rooted in the vision of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, and supported through the work of SAIIER since 1984, Auroville’s educational landscape is diverse, dynamic, and deeply human.

At its heart lies Integral Education: an approach that seeks to develop all parts of the being—physical, vital, mental, and organise these around the psychic centre, with the spiritual quest for meaning and purpose. SAIIER nurtures this vision through a constellation of schools, learning environments, and long-term experiments that span from early childhood to lifelong learning.

Each initiative under the umbrella of SAIIER grows from the soil of sincerity, freedom, and self-discovery. Education here is not a system to be implemented, but a living truth to be uncovered—again and again.

"Auroville will be the place of an unending education, of constant progress, and a youth that never ages."

The Mother

Integral Education

An Education for Ever-Progressing Human Beings

Sri Aurobindo called for an education that develops the full human being—body, life, mind, soul, and spirit. He offered not a rigid method, but a living map for growth. This section shares his writings and their relevance to educators today. It is most important to recognize that what Sri Aurobindo and The Mother propose is not only a mental principle, it is a new idea of life and a realization of consciousness. It has been said: All life is education.

Last School to No School

A Progression from Structure to Self-Mastery

The Mother’s handwritten messages suggest a natural progression—Last School, After School 123, Super School, No School—this proposition outlines an evolution in learning that moves from structured guidance to self-discovery. It is perhaps a map to the Free Progress approach and Auroville’s aspiration for unending education, constant progress, a youth that never ages, emerging within a society where life itself becomes the process of education.

Towards Lifelong Learning

A city where all life is learning

In Auroville, the aspiration to grow does not end with schooling. From teacher education and cultural centres to adult choirs, language circles, and community learning hubs, lifelong education is woven into the rhythm of daily life.
